What the odds actually describe
A game’s jackpot odds are simply the number of possible combinations. In Powerball, for example, choosing 5 numbers from 69 plus one Powerball from 26 produces 292,201,338 possible tickets — which is why the jackpot odds are quoted as 1 in 292,201,338. Every ticket, however you pick it, is one of those combinations.
Jackpot odds vs. winning anything
The headline jackpot odds are long, but most games pay out at several lower tiers — match a few numbers, or just the special ball, and you win something. That’s why the overall odds of winning any prize are far shorter than the jackpot odds. Our game pages list both figures side by side.
Why no system changes them
Each draw is independent. The balls have no memory, so a number that came up last week is no more or less likely this week. “Hot” and “cold” numbers, wheeling systems and lucky patterns are entertaining, but they don’t move the odds — every valid combination is equally likely, every single draw.
